During the chilly winter season, the bright red cat-tail willow fields of Sanxing, Yilan are bustling with activity as the harvest hits the market—just in time to welcome the Lunar New Year!

Cat-tail willow (Salix gracilistyla Miq.), also known as “catkin willow,” has an elegant and graceful appearance. It is one of Yilan’s signature floral crops and boasts the highest production volume in Taiwan. As a deciduous shrub in the willow family, it reaches peak ornamental value around Lunar New Year. In Taiwanese, its name sounds similar to “silver taels,” symbolizing good fortune and wealth, making it an essential festive flower for the season. Flower lovers can simply place trimmed Sanxing cat-tail willow branches in a vase or a traditional ceramic jar, hang some festive ornaments, and create a joyful New Year decoration that brings festive spirit to any indoor space. It’s no wonder this charming plant is especially popular with consumers.
