Aerial Reinforcements! Smart Drone Release of “Parasitoid Wasp Balls” Enhances Biological Control Efficiency

To promote the use of Trichogramma egg parasitoid wasps by farmers for controlling pests such as fall armyworm and corn borer in maize, while reducing the labor required to apply natural enemies in the field, the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Ministry of Agriculture, collaborated with Chinese Culture University, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency, and Taiwan Sugar Corporation to develop “parasitoid wasp balls” and a “GPS-positioned drone release technology.” The system can complete precise wasp ball release in just 5 to 10 minutes per hectare, increasing efficiency by more than 6 to 10 times compared with the traditional method of manually pinning wasp cards in the field.
