“White-headed leek ridging plow” field workshop
The HDARES conducted this workshop on Nov. 16. White-headed leeks are one of the four specialty agricultural products in Ji'an Township, Hualien. Its special planting method requires mechanical trenching and then manual plowing of shallow trenches. After the leeks are planted, they need to be covered with sawdust so that the leaf sheaths of leeks cannot be illuminated. It appears white due to lack of sunlight and thus has fine fibers.
However, because it relies on a large amount of manpower to cultivate shallow borders, which is slow and labor-intensive, the cultivated area of white-headed leek is decreasing day by day. Therefore, HDARES actively develops the "white-headed leek border making machine" to replace manpower with machinery and support the development of local specialty industries.
