The Kenaw of the Yuemei Tribe are harvested! A wonderful journey of seed conservation x agri-food education x origin table

Have you ever tasted the spicy shallots of the Yuemei tribe? Every year from January to March, it is the Kenaw production season of the Yuemei tribe in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County. It is also a must-try for local Amis people who travel to their hometown for the New Year. In order to support the agricultural development in indigenous areas, the Ministry of Agriculture promotes the "R&D and Diffusion of New Core Technologies for Ecologically Sustainable Agriculture in Indigenous Villages" project. Based on the traditional wisdom inherited by tribes, it invests in scientific research and development to find new development possibilities for Indigenous villages. The HDARES has been studying Kenaw, an important economic crop of the Yuemei tribe since 2021, assisting the local Amis people in solving pest and disease problems, and working with the Shoufeng Township Farmers' Association to develop the Kenaw industry. With a sustainable development layout, a seed conservation nursery was set up in 2023 and a planting ceremony was held to share scientific research results. Today, the seed conservation nursery is growing healthily under the joint efforts of the HDARES, Shoufeng Township Farmers Association and tribal people. It has reached the time of harvest and saving seeds, Yuemei has also entered the harvest season to celebrate the harvest. The HDARES, together with the Shoufeng Township Farmers Association and tribes, organized the "Yuemei Kenaw Festival and Agri-food Education Promotion Activities" on February 21, 2024.
