Breeding Process

The cherry tomato line CHT1200 was developed in 1999 by the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) after preliminary and advanced yield trials, disease evaluations and seed production tests. It is a single cross F 1 hybrid of BL790-240SD 4-2-0-SLB-SLB-SLB as the female parent crossed to CLN2071BC 1F 1-2-13-2-1-27. CHT1200 was introduced to Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station in 2001 for regional yield trials, fertilizer trial and plant density trial, and was registered in June 20, 2003 as a new variety ‘Hualien Asveg # 13’.

Plant characteristic

It is a variety of indeterminate growth habit. Fruits are oval-shaped and orange yellow at maturity, the average fruit weight is 13 g, the β-carotene content is 2.55 mg/100g fresh weight and the soluble solids content is about 6.7 - 7.2 °Brix. The fruit is firm, good taste, with low fruit cracking rate. The new variety also possessed resistance to Fusarium wilt and tomato mosaic virus. It is suitable for planting in spring, autumn, and winter. The yield in spring crop of Hualien Asveg # 13 was 23 MT/ha at I-Lan area, 38 MT/ha at Tainan area; the yield in autumn crop was 44 MT/ha at I-Lan area, and 78 MT/ha at Tainan area.
